Wh-Questions
When do you use a wh-question?
If you want information about a fact/person/thing/place/manner/… you use a wh-question.
For example: You are not sure where and at what time you meet your friend. You ask him: Where do we meet? and When do we meet? Then he can give you the information.
They are called wh-questions because they start with a question word.
Question words are pronouns: they represent the information you are asking about:
"Who" is with you?
"Peter" is with me.
The question words are:
- What: to ask about objects: What is she doing?
- How: to ask about a manner: How are you?
- Where: to ask about a place: Where are you going?
Fragen mit Wh-Fragewörtern
Wann gebrauchst du eine Frage mit einem Wh-Fragewort?
Wenn du eine Information über eine Tatsache/eine Person/eine Sache/einen Ort/eine Art und Weise/… wissen möchtest, gebrauchst du eine Frage mit einem Wh-Fragewort. Zum Beispiel: Du bist dir nicht mehr sicher, wo und wann du deinen Freund triffst. Also fragst du ihn: Where do we meet? (Wo treffen wir uns?) und When do we meet? (Wann treffen wir uns?) Daraufhin kann er dir die Information geben.
Diese Fragen werden Fragen mit Wh-Fragewörtern genannt, weil sie mit einem Fragewort beginnen, das mit "wh" anfängt.
Fragewörter sind Pronomen: sie stehen FÜR die Information, nach der du fragst:
"Who" is with you?
"Peter" is with me.
Die Fragewörter sind:
- What: um nach Dingen zu fragen: What is she doing?
- How: um nach einer Art und Weise zu fragen: How are you?
- Where: um nach einem Ort zu fragen: Where are you going?
